As AI, drones and IoT in the construction industry start making yesterday\u2019s science fiction today\u2019s reality and tomorrow\u2019s vision, can robotics be far behind? Focusing on a little thing called as-built drawings, how can robots contribute?<\/p>\n<p>As-built or as-fitted drawings include details about the finished construction of a building, including materials, location of components and the dimension of spaces and components. <\/p>\n<p  class=\"gap_100_top_dummy_class\" >\n<h5> Data Included in As-built Drawings <\/h5>\n<div class=\"textwidget\">\n<ul>\n<li> Modifications to dimensions of building components <\/li>\n<li> Changes in materials used compared to the original design <\/li>\n<li> Changes in the placement of window casings, millwork, plumbing, doors, underground utilities, etc. <\/li>\n<li> Modifications in installations of windows, HVAC or electrical systems <\/li>\n<li> All alterations to fabrications including beams, handrails and columns <\/li>\n<li> Changes in scale <\/li>\n<li> Unexpected obstructions and implemented solutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>If documentation relating to the above is faulty or incorrect, it could lead to costly errors in the future. <\/p>\n<p>Government agencies often require as-built documentation to issue building permits. If emergency lighting, fire alarm systems and smoke detection devices are not where they were supposed to be according to the original design and if their placement is not correctly documented, people\u2019s lives may be at risk.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.axiumglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Can-Robotics-Help-Fast-Track-As-built-Drawings-1.webp\" alt=\"Can-Robotics-Help-Fast-Track-As-built-Drawings\" style=\"float: right; width: auto; margin-top: 0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Maintenance teams replacing panelling or rewiring a building can lose time and money if they are misinformed about dimensions and locations. Facility teams can be more efficient knowing all the relevant changes that have occurred during the course of construction. Refurbishment, renovation or demolition of the building is dependent on having an accurate record of the different elements and any changes that have taken place.<\/p>\n<p>Quality matters, and there can never be too much or too accurate detail in as-built drawings.<\/p>\n<h5> Role of Robots <\/h5>\n<p>Robots can help improve the capture of relevant data, which can then be incorporated into Building Information Modelling (BIM), scan to BIM, point cloud models and any connected construction software.<\/p>\n<p>Robots use algorithms that feed on data from the surrounding environment to see, touch and move. Employing visual sensing through cameras, lasers and radio frequency identification (RFID), robots can sense, estimate and match real-life information with memory data. In this way, a robot can calculate its position in relation to an object and gauge the distance and angle from that object. Using sensors, robots can see objects in their vicinity, furniture close by or a far wall.<\/p>\n<div class=\"textwidget\">\n<ul>\n<li> Robots can measure and inspect large components.    <\/li>\n<li> With a microprocessor controlling it, robots can monitor system processes and record data, so that a user-friendly controller enables an unskilled worker to efficiently measure spaces or components and give data processing instructions to the machine. <\/li>\n<li> Once measured, the robot can relay the data quickly. <\/li>\n<li> A robot can scan a room in half the time a manual inspection would take. <\/li>\n<li> It can use cameras and lasers to detect alterations, additions, cracks or uneven surfaces. <\/li>\n<li> A team of robots can work together to inspect buildings, upload <span>3<\/span>D data to the cloud and inform the relevant human contact, who can then closely inspect critical changes. <\/li>\n<li> To detect cracks on walls and ceilings, disproportionate floors and walls, hollow tiles and walls at wrong angles, a contractor would need spirit levels and set squares. A robot has high-tech tools, such as a small laser scanner for navigation and mapping, a large laser scanner to inspect walls, an Inclinometer to inspect floors, a thermal infrared camera to inspect tiles and a small camera to detect cracks on walls. <\/li>\n<li> Some robots can work for three days with two hours of charging. <\/li>\n<li> Robots can move quickly around a room, using a mobile platform. <\/li>\n<li> Using cameras and lasers, a robot can assess the architectural defects of a building according to industry standards. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Thus, a robot can inspect a building faster than humans with improved accuracy and consistency, saving time and manpower. Robotics in construction can improve the quality of inspections and provide an alternative to using expensive manpower, of which there is currently a shortage in the industry. Finding the right architectural design drafting support while incorporating robotics tech into as-built drawings can be a challenge, but not
