Thus, the need for hospital building engineering design to be foolproof and efficient is more than evident.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a well-established fact. For the smooth functioning of modern society, it is critical that we have a robust healthcare sector, where essential systems run seamlessly. Unfortunately, challenges of inefficient planning and a shortage of resources abound. As part of the solution, adapting to and adopting the latest technological advances and most efficient strategies in MEP design is crucial. Clearly, MEP systems, including ventilation, plumbing and electrical systems, play a vital role in infection control in hospital buildings, and the right design partner must provide high-quality plumbing system design, duct design for HVAC systems, fire protection system design and sustainability design. <\/p>\n<h5> Major Contribution of MEP Systems <\/h5>\n<div class=\"textwidget\">\n<ul>\n<li> Effective ventilation systems with HEPA filters minimise airborne pathogens, while efficient design and placement prevent cross-contamination.  <\/li>\n<li> Plumbing systems ensure the availability of a continuous, adequate water supply and drainage, essential for hygiene and to prevent the survival and proliferation of microorganisms.  <\/li>\n<li> Reliable electrical systems support indispensable medical equipment, ensuring uninterrupted care.  <\/li>\n<li> Working together, these individual MEP components and systems create a safe environment, reducing the risk of transmitting infection and optimising patient health and those of healthcare providers and visitors in hospitals. <\/li>\n<li> The paramount importance of MEP design in hospitals can also be seen in life support systems, for which a specific uninterrupted supply of electricity is an absolute necessity. <\/li>\n<li> Similarly, each hospital department or section has its own defined set of specific requirements, such as an operation theatre, the Gynaecological Department or the Paediatrics Department. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.axiumglobal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/The_Role_of_MEP_Systems_in_Infection_Control_in_Hospital_Buildings_Image.webp\" alt=\"The_Role_of_MEP_Systems_in_Infection_Control_in_Hospital_Buildings_Image\" style=\"width: auto; float: right; margin-left: 30px; margin-right: 7px; margin-top: 7px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px;\"> Fundamental to hospital operational infrastructure, electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems must offer consistent reliability, functionality and adaptability to emergency situations. For example, improper internal air quality may have a disastrous and adverse effect on patients, both in critical care and those on the way to recovery.  <\/p>\n<p>In addition, ineffective or faulty MEP design can even shape perceptions of the facility and its medical expertise, possibly damaging reputations.  <\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s healthcare sector requires competent MEP engineering as a mandatory condition.<\/p>\n<div class=\"articles_srvices_grid_outer\">\n<div class=\"a_srvices_grid_gap_right\">\n<div class=\"articles_srvices_grid\">\n<p> It is imperative to provide efficient ventilation, air conditioning, water and drainage, lighting, power heating and infection control throughout a hospital\u2019s premises.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n.articles_srvices_grid_outer { margin-bottom: 60px; margin-top: 90px; }\n<\/style>\n<h5>Infection Control <\/h5>\n<p>While developing MEP design for a hospital, one of the most crucial considerations must be the threat of infections and measures to minimise them. Involving risk managers can help a healthcare facility determine the probability of infections and minimise their risk.   <\/p>\n<p>Some of the measures to control infection, ensure cost efficiency and save energy include: <\/p>\n<div class=\"textwidget\">\n<ul>\n<li> Optimising air changes in operating rooms <\/li>\n<li> Installing air conditioning systems in opeating theatres <\/li>\n<li> Safely increasing temperatures in operation theatres <\/li>\n<li> Co-locating units with facilities requiring isolation, such as operation theatres, ICUs, CCUs and hospital wards <\/li>\n<li> Assessing the most effective positioning for medical gas systems in corridors and rooms <\/li>\n<li> Installing a central clock and access control system to control personnel traffic and reduce the risk of infection <\/li>\n<li> Incinerating (subjecting solids to extremely high heat and converting them to ash) and safely disposing biowaste, such as amputated limbs and anatomical waste <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h5> Resilience <\/h5>\n<p>It is mandatory that essential systems function constantly and consistently to prevent the spread of infection. Patients can be left open to infection if any system fails to operate or experiences faulty functioning.  <\/p>\n<p>Thus, it is incumbent on reliable MEP designers to reduce the risk of an infectious environment and ensure an uninterrupted power supply, even provide immediate backup in case of power cuts.  <\/p>\n<p>To ensure a safe healthcare facility with optimal functionality, hospitals must find design partners who are experienced, reliable and expert in providing mechanical engineering plumbing design, mechanical <span>3<\/span>D modelling services, thermal load calculations and HVAC heat load calculations.
