Building design needs to consider the effect of shade on any building in Australia, whether Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Shading analysis helps to determine the right amount of shade HVAC mechanical engineering consultants should plan for building occupants\u2019 comfort. It also helps create MEP engineering design systems for optimal thermal comfort, especially using solar energy systems.<\/p>\n<h5>So, how does shade analysis work?<\/h5>\n<p>Shade analysis involves using calculations and <span>3<\/span>D simulation to help assess the effect of external objects on the heating\/cooling of interior spaces. The effect of surrounding objects, buildings, natural structures (hills, boulders, plateaus) or vegetation are factors.<\/p>\n<p>Shading analysis involves the analysis of shadow-voltaic systems, such as overhangs, vertical shading fins, awnings, etc. When using photovoltaic (PV) materials, shading is eliminated as much as possible, with special care is taken over chimneys, telephone poles, etc., using a solar path calculator and <span>3<\/span>D simulation.<\/p>\n<p>With the vastness and range of temperatures in Australia, uninformed decisions concerning building orientation and shading can affect interior temperatures. Shade analysis can correctly assess location-based shading.<\/p>\n<p>When PV systems are used, the shadow outline of the surroundings is recorded for one point in the system, typically the centre of the system, using the site plan, a sun path diagram and a shading analyser (a digital camera and specialised software).<\/p>\n<p>Shading can be classified into three main categories: temporary, shading resulting from a location or a building, or self-shading (caused by the system). This can be further understood as follows:<\/p>\n<h5> <span>1.<\/span> Temporary Shading<\/h5>\n<div class=\"textwidget text\">\n<ul>\n<li>Includes snow, leaves, bird droppings, soil, dust and soot that fall and collect on a PV array<\/li>\n<li>Rain cleans the array with rainwater at a tilt angle of 12 degrees or more. Increasing the tilt angle reduces shading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h5> <span>2.<\/span> Shading Resulting from the Location <\/h5>\n<div class=\"textwidget text\">\n<ul>\n<li>Neighboring buildings, rock faces, small hills, trees and even distant tall buildings can shade the system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h5> <span>3.<\/span> Shading Resulting from the Building <\/h5>\n<div class=\"textwidget text\">\n<ul>\n<li>Direct shadows can result from the building, such as chimneys, antennae, lightning conductors, satellite dishes, roof protrusions, facade protrusions and roof superstructures.<\/li>\n<li>High energy losses due to shading can be minimised by optimising tilt angles and distances between building features.<\/li>\n<li>Sun, building location, spatial arrangements, orientation, placement of windows, natural light can help increase the building\u2019s energy efficiency, thermal comfort and monetary value.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>The sun path diagram is used to calculate the effects of building, tree and land features shading.
